The new scientific concept of the FLI complements other areas of biomedical research in Jena. The FLI is actively involved in several activities intended to strengthen the biomedical research coherence both on the campus and with other institutions in Jena. Interactions with the Friedrich Schiller University Jena (FSU) include the foundation of a very active network called 'Verbund Biomedizinischer Forschung Jena (VBMF)', the nomination of a 'Beutenberg Wissenschaftspreis' and the Beutenberg campus group 'Molecular pathology'.

The Jena Centre for Bioinformatics (JCB) was established at the end of 2001 initiated by the Bioinformatics Training and Technology Initiative of the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF). The JCB's mission is to conduct research projects in bioinformatics and computational biology with an emphasis on collaborative and multi-disciplinary work and to support existing and to set up new teaching and training programmes. The JCB's research focus is on Molecular Communication Processes in Normal and Pathological Cellular States. The bioinformatics approach of the JCB is characterised by a close interaction between theoretical/computational and experimental efforts.   » more

Beutenberg Campus

Logo Beutenberg Campus e.V.

The Beutenberg campus harbors several institutes with physical, chemical and biological research focus.. This includes wo Max-Planck-Institutes, a Fraunhofer Institute, and the preclinical sciences of the medical faculty. An important step towards scientific campus coherence has been the recent establishment of regular campus seminars. The newly built Ernst-Abbe central building serves as a communication platform on the campus by providing common services including the canteen, the campus library, a lecture hall and more.

In addition, the University plans to concentrate its biochemical groups including the core supporters of a center grant in which the FLI participates, on the campus as a 'Molecular Pathology' group. Members will include Hans Knöll Institute, University Department of Virology, Max-Planck-Institute for Chemical Ecology and University Departments of Biochemistry as well as the FLI.
